Ulcer at Work
An educational health drama presented by the Oklahoma State Department of Health about stomach ulcers caused by stress. After title and credit cards and an animated ulcer graphic moving along the stomach wall, the story follows a harried businessman: he arrives at work with his wife, hurriedly grabs a garment and wipes his sweating forehead, signs documents, handles telephones and papers under pressure, and unwinds at a bar where a bartender pours him drinks. Domestic scenes show him with his wife dancing in the kitchen, a man at a piano, and tense conversations about money as a hand displays a price tag. Extended medical sequences depict doctors examining X-ray films, pointing at anatomical diagrams of the stomach, torso, head and duodenum, and animated illustrations of food traveling down the throat and through the intestines with arrows showing blood flow. The man's condition worsens: he clutches his stomach, collapses face down on the floor, and is examined on a couch by a suited doctor. Further vignettes show workshops with industrial grinders, a man on a gurney wheeled by attendants, a television interview with two men, a crying baby and boy, and men smoking cigarettes. The film ends with the man back in his car with his family, driving away past a commercial building.
