Road to Better Living, The
A business drama promoting banking, investment, and community development. It opens with a man at a large wooden desk addressing the camera, lifting a framed photograph, followed by historical illustrations - a painting of rural workers, drawings of towns with horse-drawn carriages, book covers, and crowded city street scenes - that trace the growth of commerce. Founding scenes show people signing a bank charter, a man typing at a counter, and a check being handed over, while a steam train crosses open country. A man addresses a board, pointing to line graphs and charts on the wall. The bulk of the film dramatizes businessmen in suits negotiating deals: they walk city streets past skyscrapers, meet in offices, shake hands, make telephone calls, examine maps, and pore over architectural blueprints and sepia-toned models of buildings, living rooms, and houses. A secretary takes dictation and notes, men open briefcases and exchange documents and business cards, and the deal moves toward a construction project. The men visit the building site, standing near a construction sign, shaking hands on the dirt, and walking toward the new building, before the closing narrator holds up a framed photo again and the film fades to a gold logo.
